Art & History Museums-Two Days of Exploration & Crafts

Tuesday, Feb 7th, Hux and I went with our WUMCHA friend Vivienne and her daughter Naomi to the "first Tuesday of the month" stroller tour and craft/baby yoga session at CAM -the St. Louis Contemporary Art Museum.  For those of you wondering if I walked the full 50+ minutes there and back, I "cheated" by parking by Vivienne's apartment which is about 25 minutes away and walked from there.  Although stupidly beautiful weather, I need to be a bit more gentle to my body at 8 months pregnant :).

Despite Mommy's attempts to get Hux interested in the new art installation stroller tour, he made a beeline for the second floor because he knew there were some toys there...but turns out they've really made the kids' area nice!

Notice how engrossed he is in the human body book...Daddy will be proud (Hux recently discovered that Daddy looks at skeletons all day, which he was super-impressed by as he loves all things Halloween and has a few small plastic skeletons of his own).

After Hux had the playroom to himself for the duration of the stroller tour, we headed downstairs, split an awesome chocolate chip scone (thanks Companion bakery for the free treats!) and did this awesome sculpture project where each kid got a plastic box then decorated it in the style of his/her choice.  Then they got to insert small, battery-operated lights in the boxes to make them glow (hard to see in the sunlight here).  Hux, before the craft even began, insisted on making a dinosaur, so look for the green head and red tail.

Clearly, Huxley is already a "modern art" artistic genius!

Wednesday we headed to the Missouri History Museum to learn about Mastodons in their cool new exhibit.  Here Hux is "hearing" the rumbles of an elephant- the sounds are too low for the human ear to detect, but you can feel the vibrations...

I love this picture of Hux looking at a 3-D image of an elephant.

I didn't know there were sizes of Mastodons-but clearly they varied in size.

Hux, playing with tribesmen around during the Mastodon period.

*At this point, the lovely official in the exhibit said I wasn't supposed to be taking pictures, but didn't have to delete the ones I already had...so hopefully you learned a lot--there was a TON more that Hux did-his favorite was this cave-like structure where you held a Wii clicker and pointed at different cave paintings, identified various paintings, explored the cave etc--really awesome interactions!

Outside the exhibit was the awesome Mastodon sculpture-WOW!

We went back to the room we had read Mastodon stories in and made a Mastodon paper bag puppet, as well as crowns that read "I heart Mo Willems" -as the rest of the stories we read were Mo Willems stories (a personal favorite children's author of mine, as well as Lindsay's-the WUMCHA mom who planned the event).

The best part-the whole morning-stories, exhibit, craft & more stories was totally free-and usually the exhibit costs around $13 a person to get in~

Hux can't wait to show off his new creations to Daddy :).
